Upgrading Aras Innovator 11 to Service Pack 5

Upgrading Aras Innovator 11 to Service Pack 5

Today I upgraded our demo server from version 11.0 SP3 to SP5.  Service Pack 4 added support for Firefox ESR 38, and SP5 adds support for Windows 10 as a client.  View the Aras PLM Roadmap here.

SP5 also added Aras Visual Collaboration, an advanced PDF viewer, but it requires a license and I haven't installed it yet.

Upgrading Aras Innovator 11 to Service Pack 3

Last week, I saw a demo of the new Self-Service Reporting feature in Aras Innovator.  We want to begin to play around with this feature, so I upgraded our demo server from version 11.0 SP2 to SP3.

The documentation included in the SP3 CD Image is excellent.  I don't have anything to add to the documentation, simply follow the 8 pages of instructions step-by-step to succeed. You should allocate about 2 hours for this upgrade - it's more involved than the previous upgrades to SP1 and SP2.  It requires configuration of a Reporting application server in IIS and an XML configuration for each database on your server.

Expand Storage Space On a Sherweb Virtual Machine

Expand Storage Space On a Sherweb Virtual Machine

We installed 2 instances of Aras 11 (SP1 and SP2) on Windows Server 2012 with SQL Server Express 2014, and then loaded 4 sample databases for client demonstrations.  This required 32GB of 60GB available on the local drive.  I like to keep disk utilization under 25% to give plenty of room for database growth and performance, so I needed to expand the storage allocation on my virtual machine.

Installing Additional Applications in Aras Innovator

Installing Additional Applications in Aras Innovator

This week, I installed the Aras Partner demonstration database on a new Aras Innovator 11.0 SP1 instance in our Sherweb Performance Cloud.  Since the partner database is designed to demonstrate all features of Aras Innovator, I next needed to install and activate the optional, subscription-only solutions: Requirements Management (RM), Component Engineering (CE), and Microsoft Office Connector.

Configure an SMTP Server in Windows IIS for Aras Innovator Outbound Email

Below I describe how to configure an SMTP email server using Windows Server 2012 for use with Aras Innovator. I also describe how to configure an SMTP email relay using an Office 365 email account.

For these instructions, the SMTP server must be on the same server that is hosting Aras Innovator.

If you prefer, download a PDF document with this process.

Install Aras Innovator on a New Virtual Machine in the Cloud (Part 2 of 2)

In part 1, I set up a new Virtual Machine in the Sherweb Performance Cloud and installed the prerequisites for Aras Innovator 11 (Windows 2012, SQL Server Express 2014, IIS, .NET, SMTP Server).  Next, I install Aras Innovator 11 itself on this standalone Virtual Machine.

Configure a New Virtual Machine on the Cloud for Aras Innovator (Part 1 of 2)

I'm setting up a development server for a new client, so that they can play with different Aras Innovator configurations before migrating to a production server.  First, I need to create a new virtual machine with Windows Server 2012 and SQL Server Express 2014.  I'm using the Sherweb Performance Cloud.  Sherweb uses the Azure infrastructure, but I find it easier than going directly to Microsoft because Sherweb removes most of the non-Windows options (that I don't care about) and has excellent support.

Below is part 1 of 2, where I set up a new Virtual Machine and configure the underlying software needed for Aras Innovator.

Key Links for New Aras Innovator Users

Being new to the Aras Innovator community, every week I discover a new web site that is really useful for administrators.  I'm going to keep a running list here:

  • Aras Product Roadmap - Dates and features of all past and future versions and service packs for the core Innovator platform and additional packages (Office Connector, Requirements Management)
  • Aras Events - Upcoming events and slides for many presentations from past conferences
  • Aras Newsletters - Company and product announcements
