Acronyms Used with Aras Innovator PLM

Aras Innovator® offers an integrated solution for PDM (Product Data Management) and PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) - and the acronyms don't end there.  During a kickoff meeting with an inexperienced client, I made a list of acronyms that we encountered:

  • AML = Aras Markup Language (XML)
  • AML = Approved Manufacturers List
  • Assy = Assembly
  • BOM = Bill Of Materials
  • CAD = Computer Aided Design
    • eCAD = Electrical CAD, examples: (with Aras connectors) AutoCAD Electrical, Altium, Mentor FX; (no Aras connectors) Eagle, SolidWorks Electrical
    • mCAD = mechanical CAD, examples: (with Aras connectors) Solidworks; Inventor (older, fewer engineers using)
  • Drw, Dwg = Drawing (Schematic)
  • ECN = Engineering Change Notice
  • ECO = Engineering Change Order
  • ECP = Engineering Change Proposal
  • EDR = Enterprise Document Review (part of ECO process)
  • Fab = Fabrication
  • IT = Information Technology
  • Mfg = Manufacturing
  • Mgt, Mgmt = Management
  • Mktg = Marketing
  • NOC = Network Operations Center
  • Op = Operational
  • Ops = Operations
  • PCA = Printed Circuit Assembly
  • PDF = Portable Document Format (Adobe file type for easy reading)
    • 3D PDF = Three-dimensional PDF format for viewing 3D objects in a PDF
  • PDM = Product Data Management
  • PLM = Product Lifecycle Management
  • Prt = Part
  • QA = Quality Assurance
  • QC = Quality Control
  • Qty = Quantity
  • Ref = Reference
  • Rev = Revision
  • Spec = Specification
  • SQL = Structured Query Language (databases)
  • XML = eXtensible Markup Language

  • .brd = Allegro Cadence Design Systems or CADSoft Eagle board file
  • .cam = Altium Design or CADSoft Eagle file
